ft_underwater_by_kristallin_f-d6nn6i8

This weeks fanart is titled FT Underwater by Kristallin-F. Natsu thought that the graphics in this image and that it was well drawn. Juvia loved that the dress and the hair were floating around Juvia and that it was just enough to make it look sensual and not sexual. Lucy agreed with Juvia and thought that this was a very innocent looking picture. Carla thought that the lighting was surreal looking. But Gray’s wrist looked to small and made Gray’s hands look like alien hands. Jellal liked the lighting and the skin tones, he also thought that it was nice to see Gray with a nipple. The one thing he thought was a little over done was the lighting on the bottom half of Gray. This fanart got a rating in ( in bra sizes) 1 =DDD 3 =DD. Akai Con 2013 Review

Akai Con 2013 Review

Akai Con

As first year conventions go this one was one of the better ones. Now with any convention first year or not there are always going to be your hiccups along the way. That is just how these things go.

Akai Con was held at the Millennium Maxwell House Hotel in Nashville Tennessee. For a con being new to the con circuit, it was a good place to start off. The location was an okay place, there was an outdoor area with a pool and a nice little garden deal for pictures. Most of the time I was there and I was not hosting a panel this is where I was located. There was also a nice little hill that was just outside the door for you to sit on and relax in between picture taking and panels.

Now to get to the staff part of this review. Most of the staff were wearing an arm band that said Akai Con on it, so even if you did not see their badge you just looked at their arm and you could identify them. Which was a good thing as the staff was also in cosplay and it got somewhat confusing as to who you needed to talk to if there was an issue. Now there were some things about the staff that I hope to see an improvement on. For example, when we arrived to get our badges we asked the people at the badge table just inside the door where con ops were. They just kinda starred at us like what is con ops? Now I think they were also first year staffers so I can give them a pat on the back and hope the study a little more about their con next year. Now for my big problem with the staff, or one in particular. The podcast was there in a guest capacity, which for the most part people treated us very well. But during one of the panels we had a staffer come in three times and interrupt the panel because they could not hear the video being played in the next room, the first 2 times we were like oh no problem we will turn the mics down. But once we turned the mics down so far the audience could not hear us over the movie. The staffer then came in again and was like turn them down. We finally sat the mics down and told her at this point we could not even hold our panel because we could not be heard over the movie. She got a little bit of and attitude and walked out of the panel room. I thought that it was a little rude that she would act like that to guest panelist.

Then there is the schedule, which was either so clustered that you could not tell what was going on where, or had big gaps of nothing going on at all. Then there was the overloading of one fandom or another that could have been spread out through the weekend, instead it was all on one day at the same time. This did cause a problem if you were a panelist because you either had a lot of people in one panel and maybe a handful in the other.

Apart from the little run in with the staff and the schedule the rest of the con ran smoothly. When we went to the guest suite they took care of us and made some awesome breakfast if I do say so myself. It was also a light and friendly place to chill out when being down in the main lobby became to noisy or over bearing. The staff that was working the guest room gets a thumbs up from the whole crew that attended Akai Con, they did an awesome job.

From a photographers point of view there was a small area that was amazing for photo taking. If any of you have seen any photos from Akai Con you more then likely can guess what area I am talking about. It was perfect for the sweet pictures and added just a little bit of a softer edge to the photos that were a little more hardcore.

From what I heard while walking around the con, being a general attendee was amazing. Most people were happy about what they saw at the con, or were totally blown away with the con because it was more then the expected. There were plenty of people in the dealer room as well.

As a first year con this con would get a 7 out of 10 from me. We had a sit down with the con chair and told them what we thought and they assured us that Akai Con 2014 would be even better. So yes I recommend that you put Akai Con 2014 on your con calendar for next year. I hope to see you there!

Cooking with Elfman

FNM100109WeekNight006_s4x3_lg

Ingredients
1 small red onion, halved
1 1/2 pounds tomatillos, husked and rinsed
1 to 2 serrano chile peppers, stemmed and seeded
1/2 cup low-sodium chicken broth
Kosher salt
Pinch of sugar
8 corn tortillas
3 cups shredded rotisserie chicken
2 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella and/or Monterey Jack cheese
1/3 cup fresh cilantro
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for greasing
3/4 cup crumbled queso fresco or feta cheese

Directions

Preheat the broiler. Slice half of the onion into thin rings and set aside. Place the other onion half, tomatillos and serranos on a foil-lined baking sheet and broil until the vegetables are soft and slightly brown, 7 to 10 minutes, turning as needed. Transfer the vegetables and any liquid to a blender, add the broth and puree. Season with 1/2 teaspoon salt and the sugar.

Meanwhile, stack the tortillas, wrap in a damp paper towel and microwave just until warm and soft, 1 minute; keep covered. Toss the chicken with 2 cups shredded cheese in a bowl. Spoon a portion of the chicken mixture down the middle of each tortilla. Add a few cilantro leaves and roll up. Place the enchiladas side by side in a lightly oiled 9-by-13-inch baking dish and brush with the 2 tablespoons olive oil. Broil until crisp and golden, 3 minutes.

Pour the tomatillo sauce over the enchiladas and top with the remaining 1/2 cup shredded cheese. Return to the oven and broil until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown, 3 to 5 minutes. Garnish with the onion rings, queso fresco and any remaining cilantro.

better_days_by_futuretabs-d67gxpp

This weeks fanart is titled Better Days and was done by Futuretabs. Although this artist colored the original lineart from Hiro Mashima this was a well done color job. This fanart got the rating of (in bra sizes) 5 = D. Elfman thought that the coloring was good, while Juvia thought that if the artist had come up with it on their own that it would have been a DD rating. Doctor said it was nice, but what threw him off was Natsu’s hair matched the curtains to well. Lucy thought that the shading was to one dimensional and there was not difference in the shading.

Aoi Uma Con 2013

Aoi Uma Con 2013 Review

aoilong2

Hey guys Carla here to give you a little con review of Aoi Uma Con. When I say little I mean Natsu, Elfman, and I only attended Friday. So on with the review! Aoi Uma Con was a small con held in Louisville Kentucky at the Ramada Hotel and Conference Center.

Now being that it was a Friday there was not a lot of people in attendance. From what I gathered this was meant to be a small con, but on Friday I saw maybe 50 to 60 people that were not a part of the staff at the convention. Everyone knows that conventions always have a smaller attendance number on Fridays so this was to be expected.

The staff at the con was amazing! They were nice and courteous to you no matter if you are a guest, panelist, or general admittance. This year I have heard several reviews on conventions that had staff that were horrible to the people at the conventions, so it was a relief to attend a con that had staff that were nice and did not think that you were a bother to them.

The panels I did attend were amazing. There was a wide variety of panels to keep you busy. Although not all of them were to my liking, I did hear people say that they liked what they saw on the panel list. Every con knows a good panel line up equals happy attendees.

The two things that I was bothered by was that the location did not offer great spots for photos to be taken of cosplays. I myself am a cosplayer so I understood the little bit of frustrations the photographers and cosplayers had when wanting to snap some photos that did not have a car in the background. The second thing was that the convention did not have the whole conference center to themselves. Now it was a small conference center to start with so this is a somewhat important point. The largest room in the conference center was rented to (from what I guessed) was a sporting goods company. Other then those to things I was very happy with this convention.

All in all this was a very light and relaxed convention. I do recommend this con to anyone who wishes to go to a convention but does not want to deal with the hassles that the bigger conventions present. I myself do hope that I will be able to attend the whole weekend next year.

To keep up to date click on the Aoi Uma Con banner located at the top of the page to be taken to their website. Remember to check back every so often to see what they will have in store for us in 2014.

Anime Weekend Atlanta Review

Anime Weekend Atlanta 2013 Review

Anime Weekend Atlanta

This year at AWA, Anime Weekend Atlanta, I was able to fully enjoy a wide variety of the events happening. I went to a few different panels and several different events.
As per my usual convention experience I was able to walk around and see several of my good friends and enjoyed the ability to take photos of whom ever I wished basically whenever. Now I will high light the only flaw I saw this year, traffic control. During previous conventions, I have experienced poor traffic control, and with an event as large as AWA was this year I was not surprised at the amount of people there. However, I did find the lack of direction given to con-goers slightly aggravating. At almost any convention you will find the occasional persons who ask for photographs in the middle of a walking path and usually they will be asked to step to the side or will voluntarily move, but this year I found more often than not that people were just left to their own devices so when they wanted a picture it ended up blocking the walk way and making it difficult for others to move past. A solution to this would simply be more workers making sure it was known by con-goers that they needed to move to the side and the con-goers themselves to be a little more thoughtful on where they asking for a photo.
Now the first place I went once arriving at the convention was to get into the con and purchase my badge. I arrived on Friday morning and was actually very pleased with how quickly we were able to move through to get our badges. They had originally only assigned one line for both cash and credit but quickly realized it would move faster if they organized two lines with the two forms of payment and therefore quickly resolved the problem and split the two. This made it more productive and was very convenient.  The second thing I did was try and check into my hotel, the Sheraton. This was slightly more difficult and time consuming due to the fact that someone else had originally reserved the room and was giving us the room but the matter was resolved fairly easily. The hotel worked with us and was patient with us as we figured out what was going on and told us exactly what we had to do. Over all the hotel service was one of the best I’d had in a long time.
Now once everything had been settled I headed into the dealers room and was pleasantly surprised at how everything was set up the same as previous years. It always worked well in the past and proved to still work this year as well. There were two sets of doors divided by a long wall; one for entrance and the other for the exit. At each door there was a volunteer and they monitored who went in and out, checking badges making sure people went through the correct doors and that traffic flowed thoroughly. Once inside, they had booths lined up in vertical rows and two single horizontal isles going in all the way across. The dealer’s room has always been a personal favorite of mine and I have never found a better set up than the one at AWA.
Now for my own pleasure I did attend a few different panels of my own fandoms. The Black Butler panel, the Fairy Tail Panel, and the Konoha Corner panels were the ones that stood out the most to me. However they had numerous amounts of fan panels from all different fandoms and for all different interests. Anyone can apply for a panel at AWA but being as I have never actually tried to, I couldn’t exactly tell you much about that. However, I did attend the annual AWA ball this year. The workers spent countless hours creating the beautiful masterpiece that was the AWA ball. There were hand crafted roses made from pages of older books glued onto actual tree branches that workers had to strip of any branches or leaves before decorating. Their work was gorgeous. They had great music to dance to with a variety of different tempos and styles, the band they had play was beautiful. Over all that was probably my new favorite part of the convention and I truly cannot wait to go back again. If there is anything you must experience at some point it is the AWA ball.
This year at AWA has probably been my favorite convention in a very long time. I suggest this convention to anyone and everyone who could possibly attend it.
